Remove Sales Tax from Groceries and Utilities
ACC/SD Position: With grocery prices rising faster than inflation, families are feeling the pinch. If state sales tax revenue increases sufficiently, taking even 1% off food would help. Among the remaining food-taxing states, several are reducing their food tax with such steps.
South Dakota's food tax rebate system returns only about $2.9 million of the approx. $21 million/year that low-income households pay in tax on their groceries.
Government coffers should not profit from rising grocery bills. Inadequate diets and cold houses threaten the happy, healthy childhoods we envision for all children.
