New Life Coalition

The newly formed New Life Coalition is seeking contacts across the state
(
Prepared by Don Klassen, Coordinator, M-2 Program, SD State Penitentiary)

The Problem:  Currently, nearly 3,000 adults are incarcerated in the prisons and their satellites across South Dakota, plus many more on parole or in county jails and youth in the juvenile system.  On the average, more are entering the criminal justice system every month than are being released.  Whereas the entire problem of people caught in the criminal justice system is a state-wide issue and concern, the new legislature will be facing the question in 2003 of whether to build another prison.  Although most of the inmates have families either in state or out of state, a number of families have distanced themselves from the inmates, due either to distance or the considerable stress and stigma of having a family member incarcerated, to such an extent that many of the inmates have no contact with their families and are lonely and disheartened.  Thus, many of those being released across the state may have nowhere to go upon release and are without knowledge of available resources, if indeed resources are available.

New Hope:  A variety of agencies in Sioux Falls serving people caught up in the criminal justice system in one way or another signed a charter membership December 10, 2002. Some of these agencies have been in existence for many years.  The purpose of the newly formed New Life Coalition of South Dakota is to network with and encourage various individuals and existing agencies across the state which are working with and providing assistance in one form or another to individuals who are 1) facing disposition in court, 2) currently inside of the walls of jails and prisons to help them find new hope and create a new life in their search for something meaning-ful to live for and may be re-entering society soon, 3) former inmates who have re-entered society and are struggling to survive, and 4) the families of inmates in their unique struggles in society.  If you or your agency is willing to network with any of the agencies within the newly formed coalition, please write:  New Life Coalition, Box 85334, Sioux Falls, SD 57118.
